Open City 2014

header-image
What began as an experiment in 2012 is now our biggest initiative of the year and one of the highlights of our fair city. This year’s Open City will be held on Saturday May 10 and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Our theme this year is LIVE LIFE LOUD – which may be self explanatory to some, but for others you may be wondering what the heck we mean by that.

Like much of Open City, it’s open to interpretation, but we when we say we want you to LIVE LIFE LOUD, we mean we want you to try new things, to get out of your house – and maybe your comfort zone, and explore new tastes, new experiences, new culture, and meet new people.

How much more vibrant would our city be if just some of those take out meals were enjoyed actually in the restaurants, or in our parks, on our waterfront – instead of sitting in your house tweeting about it.

How much more vibrant would our city be if we didn’t go home at 9:00 – if we stayed out, walking the streets of your neighbourhood, listening to a jazz trio busking in Victoria Park.

How much more exciting would your kids find the trip to the Saturday market if afterwards they went for a picnic to Point Pleasant Park, or even McNab’s Island for the day.

How much richer would your life be if rather than reading a blog about art, you actually went to our galleries, makerspaces, or universities and experienced it in real-time.

So, it’s up to us to entertain you on May 10, but it’s up to you to come out and take part in as much as you can possibly squeeze into a day.

Red, White & Local Friday

In the last number of years, Canadians have fully embraced the American tradition of Black Friday shopping. That one day of the year when people shop with wild abandon, line up at 4am to get a big screen tv and get a jump start on their Christmas shopping.

We like a bargain as much as the next person, but before you plan out your day, why not check with local merchants first as many of them have their own Black Friday plans. By doing so you help to keep money circulating in our community, & making us all stronger as a result.

Look for hashtag #RedWhiteAndLocal on twitter, Facebook or Instagram for deals on Friday from some of your favourite local merchants.

Small Business Saturday

Whether you take part in Friday’s shopping festivities or not, Saturday is a kinder, gentler form of Holiday shopping. On Saturday dozens of local merchants will be rolling out the red carpet for you. Think cider, cookies, music, demonstrations, & leisurely egg nog lattes with your friends.

We’ve got a lot of I Love Local businesses taking part in Small Business Saturday – so head downtown & explore, or look for #SmallBizSatHFX on twitter, facebook or Instagram.

Saturday is a throwback, a day when our main streets and our downtowns are bursting with people.

Hit the Saturday markets and then continue your day in your favourite boutique, grab a coffee or tea in your favourite cafe and have dinner or a cocktail in one of our fantastic local restaurants and bars.

City Harvest Parking – Courtesy of Waterfront Development Corp

With so much going on downtown you’d think parking would be a problem right? WRONG!! Parking is free all day at lots along the waterfront and parking is always free at meters in the city on the weekend. So, park your car, but wear comfy shoes – you’ve got a lot of ground to cover to take in all the awesomeness of City Harvest.

City Harvest Oct 5

city-harvest-banner
We’ve got a pretty full agenda coming together for City Harvest on October 5. On top of all the great local businesses that are taking part in City Harvest, the city will be alive with activity:

The Downtown Halifax Business Commission is hosting a concert series in Grand Parade just for City Harvest!

At noon, the Toronto Raptors intrasquad game will be happening at the Metro Centre.

NSCAD’s Dine by Design East is happening all weekend.

In the evening, Shelter Nova Scotia is holding their first Sleep Out For Change event to raise money for their organization.

Stay tuned for more details, but mark it in your calendar now!

Open City Thank You

To the thousands of that came out to explore Halifax yesterday, a simple thank you.

We had a great time exploring Halifax from the markets to the Hydrostone, from Barrington to Spring Garden. For those of you that put in the long hours to try and squeeze it all in, you probably failed – there was just so much to do, see & taste. The great news is those museums, shops & restaurants are here every day of the year & you can make our own Open City day any time you please.

But you were unequivocally successful in proving that Halifax still has what it takes to be a fun, exciting city with new things for you to discover all the time. We hope that you got to try something new yesterday, that you met up with old friends and perhaps made some new ones.

We’ll do it all again next year & hope that you all can join us again –

Thanks
